Recent Classical Guitar News

  • September 2008 - Guitar Foundation of America - the fall issue of Soundboard includes a number of essays and remembrances of both Aaron Shearer and Thomas Humphrey.  In addition, the score for Farewell, a hauntingly beautiful original work by John Doan is included - yet another reason to become a GFA member!

Sadly, there are two recent news items of the passing of two noted guitar figures.

  • Aaron Shearer has died (4/19/08)   Notes from Christopher Berg: I'm writing with the sad news that Aaron Shearer passed away peacefully yesterday evening at the Reynolds Hospice in Winston-Salem. He had been in declining health for several years.

Chris continues: Aaron had a profound effect on the guitarists who studied with him, and there were many. He changed the way guitarists approached their instrument and even had an impact on those who did not study with him directly. His guitar program at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore was the first guitar program at a U.S. conservatory and became the model for future programs throughout the country. I, along many if his former students, feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to study with him.

Note: there have been many recent changes to these web pages - the menu bars (top and bottom of the pages) should make locating  relevant pages easier.   I suggest/recommend and provide links to a number of editions of  guitar music (classical, fingerstyle, and other editions using standard notation as well as TAB) for guitarists at all levels - please note that I do not have all of these editions nor would I use all of them since I am primarily a classical guitarist.  The Christmas/holiday music page does contain a number of comments about difficulty levels and some favorite anthologies.  The composer specific pages provide a little background and in some cases, links to web sites with more information.
